Bird nest in carport

Spring time brings about a lot of changes. End of a school year in sight, various holidays, warmer weather, more rain, pollen, and birds making nests. However, this home the birds are trying to make does not have to be, nor should it be, in your home. If this is the case, it’s probably time for some home repair.

Birds are opportunists in a way. I can’t fault them. They’re providing for their family- I try to do the same every day. However, there’s a line the birds don’t need to cross, and that’s using your home as their own.

Debris from birds’ nests when they try and build on your home can clog key components of your house, including gutters and downspouts, your roof, and bath and dryer vent tubes. All of these may seem small on their own, but together they are critical to the overall ability of your house to function as it should. It should go without saying that bird droppings bring their own set of problems for your house, your hardscape, and your cars. And possibly health risks for you.

It’s best to take proactive measures to deter birds from seeing your house as their own instead of waiting until after they’ve established a nest. Make sure your gutters are capped appropriately, bath and dryer vent tubes have screens on them, and check for other bird opportunities. They’re opportunists.

We can get along with the birds; it’s just best that we each have our separate homes. If you’re unsure, please contact someone that deals with home repair and see what options you have to address this and keep your home happy.
